Then He Said, "I Am Not Your Father"

We were at a prayer retreat almost 15 years ago when, during a time of fervent corporate prayer, I heard the Lord say, “I am not your father.” Ever heard one Word from God and understood a whole page-full of sentences. He has a way of saying something short and simple, and causing you to understand the depth, height, width, and length of it. When God spoke to my heart with those words, I understood what He meant. He was telling me to trust Him with my heart, that He was not my earthly father, that unlike my earthly father, He, God, would not disappoint me. I fell to the floor bawling. Until then, I didn’t realize how little I was letting God in to heal and take care of me. Until then, even as a born-again Christian who had received Jesus Christ as my Lord and Saviour (Romans 10:9-11), I was still acting like the lord and saviour of my own life. Of course, I would fail dismally and be disappointed that God “did not have me” but, it didn’t occur to me that even though I confessed Christ with my mouth, my actions betrayed that I was still very much trying to control the details of my life (Mathew 15:8). It has taken me quite sometime to let go and let God, and boy do I sleep easier, and now actually experience God’s love, joy, peace, progress, in every area of my life. And to think it has always been available to me! I have found what I have been searching for 35 years, what was always available for my taking anytime I chose to access it. I cannot begin to explain the heartache I have insured simply because I didn't know that what I wanted was not for the seeking, it was for the taking.

God has never withheld his blessings from His Sons and Daughters (Ephesians 1:3-5, Jeremiah 29:11-13, 2 Peter 1:3). How could He when the Lord Jesus already paid the ultimate price to make them all available to us? There was never a day in my life as a Believer of Jesus Christ that anything God has was not mine to take (Romans 4). It was all always available to me. I just didn’t trust God to take care of me so I limited how much of His blessings I took. It is like having this awesome table spread with the most valuable treasures that ever existed and you are invited to “take them”. Depending on how much you trust the love, genuineness, and generosity of the person inviting you, you could take one, a few, many, or all that has been set before you. How much you take would not depend on whether or not the treasures exist, or whether or not the owner had invited you to take them, but on whether or not you trusted them and allowed yourself to be lavished on by them. Psalm 78:41 recounts God regretting that despite His great love for them, and unlimited source of all things good, He could not give more than the children of Israel were willing to receive. “Yes, again and again they tempted God, And limited the Holy One of Israel.” God has poured out all blessings already. He has already given you everything you need for living a godly life. You will need to believe that He exists, He is for you, He wants, and is able to reward you (Hebrews 11:6, 1 Peter 2:9, Ephesians 2:10, 3:20, 21, 1 Corinthians 2:9,10). Then, you will have to take a step of faith and "Trust in the Lord with all your heart; and do not depend on your own understanding.” (Proverbs 3:5).

Even if you have asked and been disappointed before, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart; and do not depend on your own understanding”, even if others said you can’t, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and do not depend on your own understanding”, even if you doubt that you can, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and do not depend on your own understanding.” You might already see areas where you’ve been limiting God or, know you already trust God but, have not seen results, and want to know what the block could be.
